2017 Competition Award Winners Show


The North Austin Pƒotographic Society 2017 Competition Winners Show will run from Monday, January 29, 2018 until Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Precision Camera.


The reception will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.  


Eligibility

The image must have been an a monthly NAPfS competition award winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd, Honorable Mention, in either class) during 2017  – check here to see if you were a winner!

Rules

  • Photos must hang for the entire show period (Monday, January 29, 2018 until Sunday, March 25, 201).
    Accommodations for late hanging of images also in the Pflugerville Library show will be made provided you get per-approval for the image.
  • Images must be framed and matted.
    Prints should be between 12″ and 18″ on the long side.
    Mats should be 2″ to 4″.
    Frame size will be between 16″ and 26″ on the long edge.
  • Frames must have wire hangers. NO SAWTOOTH HANGERS.
  • Space is limited.
    To allow the maximum number of people to hang their images, and depending on participation, there may be a limit on the number of prints each club member can hang. If you have multiple winning images, plan on selecting 2 or 3 of your favorites.
  • Submit only winning images.
    Images hung during this show must have won an award during monthly competition in 2017.
  • Photographers submitting their work are solely responsible for it. Precision Camera & Video and NAPfS take no responsibility for damage that may occur to the prints or mounting. Remember, this is a show in a very public space.
  • Submission deadline is Friday, January 5th, 2017.
  • Photographers will be notified of the maximum number of pieces they may hang no later than Sunday, January 7, 2017.

Speaker – Kirk Marsh

Mind BlownKirk will speak about the importance of personal work and the joys of self portraiture for testing and art. He’ll also speak about the surreal and comedic portraits he creates for people and his use of Photoshop. Kirk will then open the floor to Q and A.

About Kirk Marsh

Kirk Marsh is an environmental portrait, editorial, and commercial photographer specializing in conceptual narratives.

His love of Photoshop and the surreal has been inspired by touring with circuses and production shows throughout the world over the last twenty years as a performer.

In 2007 he picked up a camera and fell in love with it immediately. For the past ten years he has been fortunate to photograph and perform in over 53 countries and see places he never dreamed he would growing up in Iowa.

A recent Texas transplant, Marsh has enjoyed living in both Austin and San Antonio. His work was featured on the cover of San Antonio Magazine in October 2017.

Russ will talk about Through the Viewfinder photography, what it is, the gear involved, and how and when TtV originated. He’ll also show 101 samples of his TtV shots, many with with commentary.

About Russ Morris

Russ Morris is an American who was born in Washington, D.C.

He’s been making pictures for over 50 years.

Russ’ work has been influenced by many photographers, past and present, known and unknown.

His work is a result of play, experimentation, serendipity, and kismet.

Curiosity, instinct, recognition, and patience are the forces behind Russ’ creativity.

Bill Bunton – ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Competition Judge

Bill BuntonBill Bunton is a North Austin Pƒotographic Society member, an Austin area electrical engineer, and a committed photographer.

Bill rarely passes an opportunity to learn or to share what he has learned.  He is comfortable applying complex techniques to get a unique image.

Bill’s photography interests vary widely, covering landscape, macro, and the Austin music scene, but his favorite subjects are motor-sports and action.

Bill presented about motor sports photography for the August 2016 NAPƒS meeting.

Speaker – Charlotte Wright, Program Director, NAPfS

Charlotte Wright will give a presentation on the basics of Photoshop, focusing primarily on the repair of older and/or damaged images.

About Charlotte Wright

Charlotte Wright

Charlotte Wright is a professional photographer who started out in the commercial printing business before going into teaching.  She has a BS in Secondary Education and an MS in Curriculum and Instruction.  After teaching high school English for 13 years, she finished her teaching career with another 13 years teaching yearbook, newspaper, journalism, photography, and photojournalism classes. During her high school teaching career, she taught Photoshop to her photography students and first Adobe PageMaker and then Adobe InDesign to yearbook and newspaper students.

In addition, she has been an independent contractor for eleven years, doing layout and design – including preparing photographs for publication – for Action!, the monthly publication of World Bible School.

Charlotte served as videographer for Come before Winter – an organization specializing in conducting “renewals” for women in the mission field – for five years. She wielded her video camera to record renewals in Canada, Kenya, Paraguay, South Africa, and Ukraine.

Speaker – Amy V. Cooper

Amy V. Cooper

Amy Cooper will give a presentation about her history and how she got started as a photographer and then photo editor, art buyer, and now image consultant, agency owner and artist representative. She will include a slideshow photos that she took while on staff at MTV as well as work from some of the artists she now represents.

About Amy V. Cooper

Amy Cooper was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she fell in love with photography while studying fashion design at Louisiana State University. She moved to New York City in 1997 to continue studies in photography at Parsons School of Design. While in New York, she worked as a photographer and editor for Elle Décor Magazine and MTV Networks. Cooper moved to Austin, Texas in 2008 to reunite with her family and began working as an art buyer and digital asset manager in the advertising industry. In 2016 Cooper opened her own artist representation agency, Trove Artist Management, with the mission of empowering women and culturally diverse artists.

Cooper also continues to provide image consulting services to businesses and emerging artists. She is excited to offer members of NAPFS $50 off of her consulting packages.
