To the uninitiated, infrared photography can seem daunting or mysterious, especially since there are several types, with distinct uses and looks. This presentation will touch only briefly on far infrared or heat radiation photography, focusing instead on the practical and artistic aspects of capturing NIR (Near Infrared Range) images. Capturing light that’s just beyond the range of human vision results in images that can be surreal, spooky, oddly serene—or, depending on the conditions, mimic the best of traditional black and white photography.

About Mary Day Long
It all started with a battered old Pentax K-1000 from a pawnshop in Berkeley. Trained as an artist, Mary Day Long eventually switched her allegiance from painting to photography, and rode the wave from 35 mm film to medium format, until the digital photography revolution changed everything. She has published travel photography and exhibited her work, mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area, Southern California, and Austin. Her latest projects include a series of Infrared landscapes of Central Texas and a book, The Temples of Bagan, a photographic survey of the 2200+ Buddhist temples around Bagan, Myanmar.
