The first Thursday in July, 2019, was a holiday (July 4) so instead of our usual church location an outing was held in Pflugerville to photograph pfireworks. In addition to a clinic on how to photograph fireworks lead by Phil Hawkins, Clay Leben organized a “scavenger hunt” to photograph 10 patriotic subjects. The nine members who came were assigned to three team: Red, White, and Blue.
The rules required team members to shoot a photo of the following:
- A patriotic group Team “selfie” photo
- A photo with all red, white, and blue colors included
- A photo of fireworks exploding(duh!)
- An action photo with motion blur
- A photo of American flags
- A photo of people having a fun time
- A portrait of a food truck or booth vendor (ask name/permission)
- A portrait of one or more uniformed personnel on duty (ask name/permission)
- A photo of person(s) eating frozen treat(s)
- A landscape “location” photo
The Red, White, and Blue teams competed for BEST and HONORABLE MENTION recognition for each subject. The winning photographs (see below) were independently judged by Miguel Ortiz, who was not at the event. And which team won? The result was a TIE between the White and Blue teams. But all the participants said they enjoyed the game as well as practicing their fireworks photo taking skills!
Red Team:
- Clay Leben (captain)
- Chris Smith
- 2 “Best” Photos
- 5 “Honorable Mention” Photos
White Team:
- Mark Laussade (captain)

Blue Team:
