I gave this photo 1st place because it had emotional impact and caused me to imagine a powerful story. Technically, the close cropping and effective use of shallow depth of field added to the impact of the image.

1st – Red on Red by Andrew Fritz
I gave this photo 1st place recognition because it showed dramatic use of directional lighting as well as composition. The almost solid red tone throughout was both creative and impactful.
