April was our first themed competition, “April Showers: Enter your pictures of weather, good or bad. Photos must feature weather as a central element of the photo.”
Geoff Hammond of Hammondovi returned to be our judge tonight. Geoff is a a classically trained photographer working for clients, producing stock photography and who has a background evaluating images for iStock Photo. The winning images are below.
Class 1
We had 11 class 1 entries with 3 awards (1st, 2nd and 3rd).
1st – Rooster on the Run by Kimberly Fore
The judge’s paraphrased thoughts on why this image won:
This photo shows a competent knowledge of composition, camera technique, and mood. The darkened, gloomy background gives a rainy day feel, while the rooster with its dimmed white and red hint at a dampened hope for the morning.
2nd – Snaily Rain by Kimberly Fore
3rd – The Leading Edge by Keith Mitchell
Class 2
We had 9 entries in class 2 with 2 awards (1st and 2nd). The winning images are below.
1st – Carrie-Ophelia by Josh Baker
The judge’s paraphrased thoughts on why this image won:
The position of the subject peacefully lying as if asleep in the water have a clear nod to Shakespeare’s Ophelia from Hamlet. Focusing on the foreground edge as the leaping point and freezing the rain in its descent add to the tension of this image. It is artfully thought out and expertly executed.
